A Random Assortment

~ Herman Miller summer picnic posters.

~ Walking while black.

~ Free play as a luxury for those who can afford to create it.

~ Bob Dylan paints.

~ What we're eating: Shashuka with feta.

~ Mail carrier fashion.

~ Simcha on women's role:

But that’s precisely what happens when we start a sentence with, “Woman are good at …” or “Women’s job is to …” or “The thing that women can offer is …”
It doesn’t matter if you’re a conservative or a progressive, and if your ideas of womanhood are millennia old or newly minted.
Always, when you get specific about women’s roles, there will be a good woman somewhere who is serving God with all her heart, soul, mind, and strength, and she will think, “But I’m not like that.”
I sympathise with anyone who tries to write about the role of women. It’s so tempting to just say, “Let’s keep it simple. Wives, obey your husbands. The end.”
I tried that myself, as newlywed – tried obeying the hell out of my poor husband. Later, I realised that what the poor guy really wanted was to live his life with the weird, cranky, specific woman he fell in love with.
He didn’t want The Catholic Wife; he wanted me.
And therein lies the truth about trying to nail down the role of women.

I also use that shakshuka recipe! But it doesn't compare with Dizengoff in Philly.

:( I didn't go there!

I'm sure you'll have cause to return before long. It's near Rittenhouse, and serves shakshuka for Sunday brunch (and world's greatest hummus all other days). They also have a location in NYC, I think, but I've never been to it.

You say that so confidently because you are not in a place where all the food is so so terrible (one good Mexican place and that's it). ;) We like to eat out and it is so much safer here to eat at home.

All the more reason to be confident of your eventual return to Philly, no?

Our food options are good, but having a kid largely prevents us from indulging in them, so I'm much more interested in the quality of the grocery stores.

Yes, the really important thing is the proximity of good take-out, in our experience. Or grocery stores with good prepared food options. *cough*Trader Joe's
