During the aforementioned seminar, we particularly discussed kissing, as Maria withholds even a kiss from the man she allows to hope for her hand, in all but agreeing to marry him until he speaks to his parents and hers. Professor Kass suggested that it is significant that she withheld this kiss because a kiss is a small consummation, a participation in the sexual act, an exchanging of breath in a meeting that is spiritual as well as physical.
