Labyrinths

Goodness gracious, I think that nailing the Catholics down on the precise nature of the magisterium is harder than finding out the Masons' secrets. Isn't there a book on the secrets of the Mason's out somewhere? It seems like the Catholic mind on the magisterium is to be as vague and non-committal as possible.

Well, "Magisterium" officially means the authority of the Pope and Bishops to proclaim truth. It's the equivalent of _ex Cathedra_ for Ecumenical Councils and Synods.

However, since the teachings that Ecumenical Councils proclaim are recorded in conciliar documents and echoed in Vatican documents and the Catechism, these are also part of the "magisterium."

Meanwhile, the liberals in the 1960s rebelled against _Humanae Vitae_ by making up the idea of a Magisterium of the laity.
