On Dividing Well

Political science should be concerned with good divisions--good divisions in government and in life and in political science conferences. I am repeatedly dismayed at the (typical) division of political theory into: ancient and medieval, modern, continental, democratic, and American. Is all contemporary political thought equal to democratic political thought? This makes me very uncomfortable. Moreover, what about a paper in the history of political thought method? Where do you place that?
