Pennsylvania Cooking
My roommates' intrigue at "chicken and waffles," a common dinner at the Hale home, made me wonder what other things that my mom cooked when we were growing up were Pennsylvania Dutch. Among other things, we ate whoopie pies, strawberry rhubarb pie, stewed rhubard, shoo fly pie, funnel cakes, scrapple, lebannon balony and homemade donuts. Moreover, I've decided that my mother's strict menu of a meat, a vegetable, and a starch is likely a PA Dutch influence, and I bet the Pennsylvania Dutch have something to do with her (and my) conflation of the soup with the stew (we don't know how to make broth). Anyway, I've decided that this is a tradition that needs to be embraced.
