The Hottest VP from the Coolest State

Number 3 of this Newsweek interview with the woman Peter Lawler calls, "Our Sarah" is about motherhood and politics. Palin is discussing challenges she's overcome in politics. After Palin asserts that she can do the job (of governor) as well as any man who has a family, the interviewer asks her if mothers ever asked her while she was campaigning if she would be able to do the job with children. Palin's response (in a somewhat offended voice): "Amazingly, some Neanderthals did!"

Frankly, I'm somewhat shocked that men I know who wouldn't prefer their wives to work are so wholeheartedly supporting Palin.

I had watched this interview a few days ago and was bothered by it. I am annoyed that she mocked a person for asking what I think is an obviously legitimate question. She seems to think that the suggestion that men and women have a naturally different roles in relation to their children is not only untrue, but stupid. Obviously, I disagree.

Still, I like her. I would not want my wife or mother to do what she is doing, but I would want my VP to be like her. Is that consistent? Of course not, but oh well! I will be more than happy to vote for her.

To clarify, I am excited about her, not because I think she is a model mother or woman (though I still think she might be admirable in most of those respects) but because I think she is a model politician for a party that really needs them.

I agree with Warren. It upsets me when people call Palin the ideal woman, or the true face of feminism, or even an ideal political candidate. We know about many of her political virtues, and I'm sure she has many personal ones as well. That doesn't mean she should be emulated in every way.

It's like with saints (not that she's a saint. Among other things, she's alive)--we're supposed to imitate their holiness and devotion, not their actions.

Because saints are crazy crazy people.
