Rant

This makes me really angry! Books are not just another material for design for rich people (not that I have anything against design or rich people). But you can't just farm out the job of creating your library. It doesn't make any sense--someone else can't know your taste in books unless a) they're your best friend or b) you don't actually care about reading the books themselves. And covering books with white paper because no one's going to read them but they serve as texture in the room!! Holy goodness! How vapid!

When anthropologie started playing with books as design in their stores, I was excited because a) I love anthropologie and b) it seemed to me to say, "Books are wonderful" and I agree with that. But now, people asking for libraries created out of certain colors or themes? Silliness! At best: you miss half the fun of books, which is buying them.

yeah, I read an article once about how the Strand in NYC rents/sells books by the foot--so you can adorn your house without much effort. They will customize according to color, age, type, or genre, or a combination.

so strange. so sad.
