That's the real question! What is the difference between a principality and a kingdom? Why do we need these two different things?
Wikipedia is surprisingly unhelpful: "A principality (or princedom) is a monarchical feudatory or sovereign state, ruled or reigned over by a monarch with the title of prince or princess, or (in the widest sense) by a monarch with another title within the generic use of the term prince."

"Why is he called prince and not king??!"
Monaco was formally recognized as a principality, not a kingdom, by France and in various treaties.
