Spisska Kapitula (Eastern Slovakia)

The Spiss (my apologies for missing diacritical marks) region of Slovakia is simply one of the most beautiful places on earth. I do not write this lightly. I think that my graveyard in Williamsport is a close second.

These first two pictures are from a graveyard outside of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Zehra (pictured below). The church itself has frescoes dating all the way to the 13th century. It has one pillar in the center, which is quite unusual, and our tour guide said it is a symbol of the tree of life, which figures prominently in the oldest (and most complex) fresco in the church.

These next couple of pictures are from the area just around St. Martin's Cathedral in Spisska Kapitula. This is where we stayed.

On the left of the picture above is Spissky Hrad (hrad means castle). On the right is St. Martin's Cathedral itself.

The fields in the morning are gorgeous.

As is the castle at night--it's all lit up until midnight, when it turns off.

A lovely Gothic side altar in St. Martin's Cathdral.

This is a stained glass window in St. Martin's of St. George and the dragon. It's hard to make out, but on the left (behind him) is the castle, and on the right are St. Martin's two towers.

Basically, the whole region should just be proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage site (okay, so most of it already has been...).
