If you stick with the rule that affect is a verb and effect is a noun, then that solve about 95% of the problem. Lay and lie is what confuses me.
I also have an immense amount of trouble with apophatic and cataphatic. Some things just refuse to go into my head.
I've come across this problem just now in a letter I'm writing and I think that the problem is my ability to tell nouns from verbs.
